Features

Everything between you and a great ride

Plan it, find it, share it, ride it. Here's everything Byker does, in detail, and which parts are free. (Nearly all of it.)

Route planner

Plan the roads you actually want

You choose the roads; Byker joins them up. Tap the red +, then tap the map or search for a place or UK postcode to add points. The route follows the roads and re-plans in a moment every time you change it.

  • Drag points on the map to fine-tune, reorder them in a list, or reverse the whole route

  • See the miles, the riding time and the total climb as you go

  • Mark points as a stop, fuel, café, photo opportunity or overnight, so you and anyone you share with know what's there

  • Finish where you started turns any route into a round trip in one tap

  • Every point gets a proper name from the map, like "A57, Snake Pass"

Avoid what you don't want

Switch on "No motorways" to keep to the good stuff. With Premium you can avoid toll roads and ferries too.

Multi-day tripsPremium

Add overnight stops and Byker splits the trip into days, each with its own distance, time, start and finish.

Bring routes with you

Import a GPX file from another app or a mate, and it lands in the planner ready to edit and save. Duplicate your own rides to try a new version, or save a copy of one a rider shares with you.

Save it your way

Give it a name, a description, up to 2 photos (10 with Premium) and tags like Winding, Scenic or Coastal. It stays private until you say otherwise.

The map

See every ride, and everything along the way

The Map tab shows your rides and everyone's published rides as red lines, right where they are. Search for a road or a tag, filter with a tap, and open any ride from its card.

  1. Switch to Places to see fuel stations, cafés, bike parking, viewpoints and bike shops, or to Events to see what's on and where
  2. Tap a place for directions, to look it up on Google Maps, or to add it to your ride as a fuel, food or photo stop
  3. Light, dark and gentle-colour maps, drawn by Byker for riders
  4. Great Britain and Ireland in full detail, refreshed from OpenStreetMap every month
Speed cameras and alerts

Know what's on the road before you set off

Switch the Map tab to Speed cameras or Alerts to see what riders know about the roads right now. Every report comes from riders, and riders keep it honest.

  • Speed camera
  • Average speed
  • Camera van
  • Road closure
  • Biker down

Speed cameras

Fixed and average-speed cameras across Britain and Ireland, from OpenStreetMap and riders' own reports

Camera vans

Shown for 2 hours from the last time a rider confirmed one. Going to an event, or sharing your location? Byker tells you when a van is reported on your way

Road closures with the reason, how long for and any diversion, and biker down, so riders behind know to take care

Tap any alert to Confirm it's still there, or say It's gone

Free for every rider. Reports only count from riders who are near the spot, and Byker never shows who reported anything. Biker down is no substitute for 999: call it first.

Ride recording

Ride first, plan later

Found a great road by accident? Press record and ride. Byker draws your track as you go, and turns it into a ride you can save, describe and share when you get back.

  1. Press record

From the red + in the app.

  2. Ride

Screen off, phone in your pocket.

  3. Save it

Name it, tag it, add photos.

  4. Share it

    Or keep it to yourself.

  • Keeps recording with the screen off or the app in the background
  • Pause and resume from the notification on Android, without unlocking the phone
  • Shows distance, speed and moving time (stops for fuel and tea don't count)
  • If the phone closes the app, your ride is kept and waiting when you reopen it
  • No signal when you finish? Save it anyway. It waits on your phone and uploads when you're back online (up to 5 rides waiting, or as many as you like with Premium)
  • Hide exact start and finish is on by default when you save, because most rides start at home

Your track stays on your phone while you ride. It's only sent to Byker when you choose to save it.

Ride it

Byker plans. Your sat nav navigates.

There's no fiddly turn-by-turn in Byker, because you already have something better for that. Send any ride to the navigation you trust.

01

Open in Google Maps

One tap opens the ride in Google Maps with its start, finish and shaping points. Quick and easy for a ride you know roughly. Google may pick different roads between points, and Byker always says so.

02

Export GPX, exactly

A GPX file with the full line and your points, ready for the Garmin app, BaseCamp, TomTom, OsmAnd, Kurviger and other apps and devices. Your sat nav follows exactly the roads you planned.

03

Honest times

Distances in miles and times you can plan a day around. Prefer kilometres or a 12-hour clock? Change it in App Settings.

Offline maps

Maps that keep going when the signal doesn't

The best roads tend to be where the phone signal isn't. Download your part of the country and every map in Byker keeps working: quicker to load, and still there on the moors.

  • Choose from Great Britain & Ireland, or a region: Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Ireland, North of England, Midlands & East, South East & London, or South West England
  • Byker tells you how much space it needs first, and resumes if the download stops
  • Maps are updated every month, and Byker lets you know when there's a new one
  • Free riders keep one region on the phone; Premium riders keep as many as they like

Planning a new route, search and loading rides still need a connection. Recording doesn't.

Privacy

Your rides can say where you live. So we're careful.

Byker is built so you choose what other riders see. Every privacy control is free, for everyone, always.

Private by default

A ride only you can see until you publish or share it

Hide exact start and finish

Other riders see the route without its first and last stretch, so your front door stays private

Photo locations removed

Every photo is stripped of its hidden data, including GPS, before anyone sees it

Your location stays on your phone

It's rounded before it's used to find rides nearby, and never stored. If you choose to share where you are, Byker keeps only your latest position, and deletes it when you stop

Your data, your call

Download everything, or delete your account and all of it, from the app

No adverts. No tracking.

There are no adverts in Byker and no advertising trackers, and we never sell your data. Byker runs on its own server, with its own maps, routing and search, so your rides aren't passed around other companies.

How Byker stays free

Mostmapappspayanothercompanyeverytimeyoulookatamap.Bykerrunsitsown,soplanningstaysfree.

Riders who choose Byker Premium pay for the server and for new features, for everyone. Thank you, if that's you.
