Roadworks and official road closures

Closures and roadworks from official sources, on the map and on your rides.

Updated 24 October 2026

Byker shows official road closures and roadworks in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, from the councils' and highway authorities' own records.

On the map

In the Map tab, choose the Roadworks view. Chips under the search box show Closures, Roadworks or both. Each one shows along the stretch of road it covers; ones starting in the next two weeks are faded until they start.

Tap one for the road, why, the dates, who's doing the works and any diversion. Zoomed far out, the map shows only closures and works under way; zoom in for the rest.

The map on byker.net/app has the same Roadworks layer.

On your rides

  • A ride's page says Roadworks in 2 places on this ride, and each opens its details.
  • The planner counts the roadworks on your route under its distance as you plan.

Told about closures

When a road closure is under way, or starts within a week, Byker tells you once if it's on the route of:

  • an event you're going to, while the road is closed;
  • a ride you've saved.

Choose this with Road closures in your notification settings. Roadworks that only slow you down, like temporary lights, show on the map but don't send notifications.

Plans change, and works can finish early or overrun. Check before you ride, and follow the signs on the road.
